King Aba Jifar II's father was the first ruler of Jimma to embrace Islam. The Oromia Region is now predominantly Muslim, and the Palace is considered a symbol of the origin of Islam in the region. The Palace is the oldest, largest and best preserved surviving example of traditional wooden architecture in Jimma.

The Omo Kibish Formation is a geological formation in the Lower Omo Valley of southwestern Ethiopia. Location of the archaeology dig where human bones believed to be 195,000 years old were discovered along the Omo River in southern Ethiopia. The bones are nearly 40,000 years older than skulls from Herto, Ethiopia, the previous record holders.
