An Entoto day trip is one of the best ways to step outside the rhythm of Addis Ababa without spending a night away from the city. Mount Entoto, rising to 3,200 metres directly above the capital, offers panoramic views over one of Africa's largest cities, eucalyptus forests that feel cool and remote even minutes from the urban core, and a cluster of historic churches connected to the original founding of Addis Ababa. Combine it with the extraordinary monastery of Debre Libanos, a 90 minute drive north, and you have a full and deeply rewarding day of Addis Ababa sightseeing.
Mount Entoto: History Above the City
Entoto was the original site of the Ethiopian imperial court before Emperor Menelik II relocated his capital to the lower, warmer elevation that became Addis Ababa. The hill retains two important historical churches from this period. Entoto Maryam, built in 1882, is where Menelik was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia, and the small adjacent museum holds his personal possessions, imperial clothing, and ceremonial objects that provide a vivid window into late 19th century court life.
The second church, Entoto Raguel, sits slightly higher on the ridge and offers the most dramatic views over the city. On a clear morning which the dry season reliably delivers you can see Addis Ababa spread out below you for 30 kilometres in every direction, a remarkable contrast between the eucalyptus forest around you and the dense urbanity below.
The forest itself is home to Colobus monkeys, and the birdlife (Wattled Ibis, Thick billed Raven, White cheeked Turaco) is excellent for a morning walk. The Entoto Natural Park is being developed as a recreational and conservation area, and the paths through the eucalyptus are well maintained and signposted.
Debre Libanos: One of Ethiopia's Most Sacred Monasteries
About 90 kilometres north of Addis Ababa in the upper Jemma Valley, the monastery of Debre Libanos is one of the most spiritually significant sites in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. Founded in the 13th century by Abuna Tekle Haymanot one of the church's most venerated saints it sits at the edge of a dramatic escarpment above the Jemma River gorge.
The current church building is a 20th century structure, but the site's holiness is embodied in the cave behind the church where Tekle Haymanot is said to have spent years in prayer, and in the holy spring water that flows from the cliff face and is collected by pilgrims for healing. On Sundays and major feast days, hundreds of pilgrims gather here, and the atmosphere is genuinely devotional.
