Woven Giants of the Highlands: Inside the Dorze Beehive Huts of Chencha

High above the Rift Valley lakes, where the air turns cool and the hillsides glow green, the road from Arba Minch winds up toward the Gamo Highlands. Among banana plants, bamboo fences, and eucalyptus groves rise some of southern Ethiopia's most striking homes: the towering beehive huts of the Dorze people, each one standing like a woven bell against the bright highland sky.

Homes Woven to Last

A traditional Dorze house is built entirely from local bamboo and enset fibre, shaped into a graceful dome that can reach up to twelve meters in height. Skilled builders weave the flexible frame first, then cover it with overlapping layers of thatch that shed the heavy highland rains. A low, sheltering porch frames the wooden door, while a small window high in the dome lets in light and air. Every curve is functional, yet the result feels like sculpture.

Silver Grey and Honey Gold

Walk through a Dorze compound and you will notice that no two huts look quite alike. Older houses weather to a deep silvery grey, while freshly thatched ones glow a warm honey gold. Standing side by side, the two tones tell the story of a home that is continually cared for, repaired, and renewed rather than replaced.

A House That Can Move

Because the base of a hut is the part most exposed to termites and damp, Dorze families have traditionally been able to dismantle a house, shift it to a new site, and rebuild it, repairing the lower sections as needed. Inside, the high central space serves for sleeping, storage, and a warm hearth, while the entrance area can shelter animals on cold highland nights. Stepping through the low doorway gives a real sense of how architecture, climate, and daily life are woven together.
