Meskel Demera: Sacred Pyramids, Yellow Daisies, and Spiritual Harmony

The centerpiece of the entire Meskel celebration is the Meskel Demera, a massive conical structure constructed out of tall wooden poles, dry branches, grass, and bright yellow seasonal flowers. Erected in city squares, village plazas, and church courtyards across Ethiopia, the Demera represents both an ancient architectural art form and a profound sacred symbol.

Constructing the Demera Pyramid

Days before the festival, community members gather to erect the Meskel Demera. Tall eucalyptus beams are planted firmly in the ground and bound together in a high conical pyramid. Dry branches and grass are layered tightly inside to ensure an even burn, while the outer surface is adorned with lush garlands of yellow Adey Abeba flowers. At the apex of the structure, a wooden cross is securely anchored to face the sky.

The Procession of Bishops and Deacons

On the day of the ceremony, colourful processions wind through the streets toward the Meskel Demera site. High clergy dressed in gold embroidered velvet vestments carry ornate silver processional crosses and velvet parasols. Choir groups dressed in traditional white cotton robes sing rhythmic hymns accompanied by the deep beat of the kebero drum and the metallic shimmer of the tsenatsil sistrum.

Blessing and Ritual Circling

Before the Demera is set alight, church dignitaries encircle the structure three times while burning frankincense in silver censers. Special prayers are recited, asking for peace, health, unity, and rich harvests across the land. Worshippers bow in reverence as holy water is sprinkled over the assembly in a spirit of renewal.

Neighborhood Demera Celebrations Across Ethiopia

While the national event in Meskel Square draws global attention, smaller Meskel Demera towers are built in virtually every village, town quarter, and family compound in Ethiopia. Neighbors contribute wood and flowers to build their local tower, reinforcing community solidarity and mutual hospitality that has endured for centuries.
