Meskel in Ethiopia: The Celebration of the Finding of the True Cross

Meskel in Ethiopia is one of the most vibrant, spiritually uplifting, and culturally significant celebrations on the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar. Registered by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this ancient festival commemorates the discovery of the True Cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. Held every September following the highland rainy season, Meskel marks a season of spiritual renewal, family reunions, and the blooming of bright yellow daisies across the Ethiopian highlands.

The Historical Roots of Queen Helena and the Cross

The origins of Meskel date back to the fourth century when Empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, embarked on a quest to locate the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. According to sacred tradition, Empress Helena received divine guidance in a dream instructing her to build a bonfire and follow the direction of its drifting smoke. The smoke settled over the spot where the Holy Cross lay buried. Centuries later, a fragment of the True Cross was brought to Ethiopia and is preserved at the mountain monastery of Gishen Mariam in Wollo.

Welcoming Spring and the Bloom of Adey Abeba

Beyond its deep spiritual meaning, Meskel in Ethiopia marks the arrival of Tseday, the Ethiopian spring season. As three months of heavy rains come to an end, sun rays bathe the rolling hills and fields of yellow Adey Abeba daisies bloom in millions across the countryside. Children collect these bright yellow flowers to weave festive garlands and present them to neighbors as tokens of blessing and joy.

Demera Eve: The Great Gathering in Addis Ababa

The celebrations begin on Meskel Eve, known as Demera. In Addis Ababa, hundreds of thousands of believers, priests in ceremonial silk vestments, Sunday school choir members, and international visitors gather at the iconic Meskel Square. High ranking patriarchs and bishops lead prayers while chanting deacon groups circle a towering central bonfire pyramid decorated with yellow flowers and a large wooden cross atop.

Spiritual Unity and Sacred Blessing

As darkness falls across the city, church leaders light the massive structure with long ceremonial wax candles. As flames leap into the night sky, crowds sing traditional hymns of praise while brass trumpets sound across the square. The direction in which the central pole eventually falls is watched eagerly by worshippers, as tradition holds it portends peace, abundant harvest, and spiritual prosperity for the coming year.
